Bio: Ms. Sonia Urbom

Sonia Urbom has been a U.S. diplomat since 2002, and will serve as the spokesperson at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) starting in summer 2015. Sonia has a BA in International Studies from the University of Washington and a Master of Education from Harvard University. She and her husband Scott (also a diplomat) have two daughters at TAS. The Urboms moved to Taiwan in August 2014.

Specializing in public diplomacy, Sonia explains U.S. culture and policy to foreign audiences through exchange programs and communication channels like press and social media. She served at the U.S. Embassies in Beijing, Barbados, and Ukraine and at the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C., where she gained experience in strategic planning, aligning finances with priorities, managing budgets, and communications.

Sonia also has extensive experience working with students and educators. She was an assistant teacher at the International School of Bellevue (high school), taught high school English as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine, worked as a resident director for a college study abroad program, and volunteered as an ESL tutor and Girl Scout leader.

Sonia is grateful that her children have an opportunity to attend TAS and is honored to be able to serve the TAS community on the school Board. As a Board member, Sonia will help maintain the important relationship between TAS and AIT. During her term of service, she will focus on student learning, support recruitment and retention of motivated and inspirational faculty, and maintain a commitment to the balanced development of all students.

This year the Board will formulate a new four-year strategic plan. With Sonia’s background in education and international work experience, she can contribute to a strategic plan that will ensure TAS continues to develop as a financially sustainable, premier international school that attracts families from Taiwan and around the world.
