The TAS social studies program is designed to help young people build a just, equitable, and sustainable world. Our program seeks to enrich learners’ understanding of social studies by making connections to past and current events through the lens of the TAS values. We provide students with the skills and tools they need to be ethical and engaged members of local and global communities.

As students of history, our Middle Schoolers learn and practice a variety of skills for building their understanding of the past and their connection to current events, both local and global. They practice applying the concepts of cause and effect while comparing and contrasting individuals, events, and eras through the lens of the TAS values. They apply critical thinking skills to examine and evaluate evidence and opinions from a variety of sources and materials. They transfer this deeper understanding to practice problem-solving of real and hypothetical issues affecting individuals, groups, and societies in the past and in the present. Historical understanding and skills are enhanced through activities like simulations, debates, and presentations; these speaking and acting opportunities allow students to gain confidence in the classroom and showcase what they have learned. This large variety of skills and approaches provides a strong foundation for students to continue “thinking like a historian” as they move through their educational journey.
