See an overview of our Middle School World Languages program
TAS believes language is a powerful tool for understanding and describing our world and ourselves, opening doors to meaningful communication, cultural understanding, and joyful discovery. Learners think critically and engage with diverse perspectives as compassionate global citizens, expressing ideas, interacting respectfully, and using language in real-world contexts. Through a shared culture of belonging, we empower our multilingual students to take risks, learn from mistakes, and develop resilience to grow as lifelong learners.
The Middle School Mandarin program is divided into Heritage and Mandarin as a Foreign Language tracks, with multiple levels of Mandarin in each track. Heritage Mandarin courses develop students’ 4-skill competencies with an emphasis on reading and writing proficiency. Mandarin as a Foreign Language focuses on daily life and practical topics in order to develop listening and speaking skills while, at the same time, building a solid foundation in reading and writing. Students are placed into the appropriate Mandarin class by the Middle School Mandarin team. Spanish
The Middle School Spanish program gives students the opportunity to study the second most widely spoken language in the United States. Through authentic materials and interactive lessons, students will acquire a solid foundation of beginning language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students in our Spanish program will also improve their cultural knowledge and understanding of Spanish-speaking communities around the world. The learning environment is designed to be both enjoyable and effective, using age-appropriate learning tools and activities including songs, videos, simulated skits, and plenty of authentic communicative exercises. Students with prior experience studying Spanish will be given a placement test to determine the most appropriate class for their current language level. Japanese
Beginning with Level 1A, students will build foundational skills in speaking and listening. The course emphasizes practical communication, while also guiding students through Japan’s unique writing systems.
Through authentic materials and engaging lessons, students will explore everyday topics and cultural themes that connect language learning to Japan’s rich traditions and modern global influence. The program integrates technology to support interactive practice and independent study, helping students gain confidence and autonomy in their learning.
In addition to language skills, students will develop an appreciation for Japanese culture, history, and contemporary society. The Middle School Japanese program aims to spark curiosity, foster intercultural understanding, and provide students with the tools to continue their journey in this new language.
