Graduation Requirement

Four years (eight semesters) of upper school attendance are required with 22 credits to be earned in grades 9 – 12. Credits are awarded on a semester basis. This is a minimum requirement; students seeking admission to a selective college or university must exceed this minimum requirement. The 22 credits to be earned are as follows.


4 credits

Grade 9: English 9, or Honors English 9

Grade 10: English 10, or Honors English 10

Grade 11 and 12: Full-year electives each year. Note: Journalism and Expository Writing do NOT fulfill this requirement.

Political Science & Forensics 1 credit Public Speaking: 1 credit

Students may satisfy the requirement by taking Public Speaking, Rhetoric, and Debate, or by taking AP Seminar – Capstone Year 1, or by taking Theater Arts, Honors Theater or Honors Advanced Theater. Note that students may NOT satisfy both the public speaking and the performing & visual arts requirements with the same course.

Students may also fulfill the requirement by actively participating in Model United Nations while enrolled in International Relations/IBSL Global Politics. Students wishing to pursue this option must actively participate in at least one MUN conference and attend the team practices required for that conference. Please see the MUN Coordinator, Ms. Sinclair, for details and permission.

History & Social Studies

3 credits

Grade 9: History of Asia or AP World History

Grade 10: History of Europe or AP European History

Grade 11: United States History (see History Dept. page in the course catalog for options)


3 credits

Choice of courses in mathematics; four years of math are recommended.

Computer Science and Robotics 0.5 credit

The Virtual and Augmented Reality course can satisfy the requirement only with special approval from the Dept. Chair.

Grade 9: Physics

Grade 10: Chemistry

Grade 11: Biology

Performing Arts or Visual Arts

1 credit

This requirement can be fulfilled by taking visual arts or performing arts courses which total 1 credit.

Note that students may NOT satisfy both the public speaking and the performing & visual arts requirements with the same course.

World Languages or Classics

3rd year proficiency

P.E. and Health

2 credits

Required for ninth and tenth grade students

The balance of the required credits will be made up of elective courses.
