Celebrating Linguistic and Cultural Diversity with Middle School Students

The Middle School World Language department orchestrated a World Language Day to honor the linguistic diversity within our community and to offer students the chance to discover the beauty of language and culture through hands-on experiences. Featuring athletic competitions, culinary journeys, and artistic showcases, the event empowered students to engage with languages and cultures beyond the classroom. 

In the Gym, students from Greek & Latin classes tackled the spirited model Olympics, taking on challenges like ancient chariot races and team rallies with enthusiasm and good spirits. “It was inspiring to witness students channeling the spirit of ancient athletes,” said Ms. Dang, Middle School Classics & Latin Teacher. 

In the bustling cafeteria, the air was filled with the tantalizing aromas of Spanish and Latin cuisines as students embarked on a culinary journey through iconic dishes. With expert guidance from renowned restaurants like Teotihuacán, Eddy's Cantina, and El Marqués, students learned the secrets of preparing traditional dishes and the rich histories and cultural contexts behind each cuisine.  

“Learning about Spanish cuisine through cooking was an eye-opening experience for our students,” shared Mr. Silva, our Middle School Spanish teacher. “While they may have had plenty of opportunities to taste the food, having chefs come directly to our campus to cook in front of them is a rare treat! It's also an opportunity to teach our students to appreciate food because they witness the hard work behind every dish.” 

In the Auditorium and Middle School Library, Mandarin Heritage students were treated to a captivating presentation by Mr. Wang Wen Hua, a distinguished Taiwanese author known for his contributions to children's literature. His engaging talk transported students into the world of storytelling and creativity. Ms. Kao highlighted the opportunity for students to connect with a literary icon and explore creativity through storytelling. “Mr. Wang is a fantastic storyteller, and it’s a very interesting way to learn about the story of The Journey to The West,” expressed Ms. Kao. 

In the Harmony Theater, students were entertained by the enchanting melodies of Taiwanese traditional opera, exploring Taiwan's rich cultural heritage through interactive activities and performances. “The opera performance served as a window into a vibrant cultural tradition that many of our students were unfamiliar with. They were impressed by the elaborate costumes, the unique instruments, and the actors' dedication to preserving this precious cultural heritage,” Ms. Kao emphasized the importance of exposing students to diverse cultural traditions. 

The event, expertly organized by the dedicated Middle School World Language team, aimed to foster cultural understanding among students. “We wanted to create an immersive experience that would ignite students' curiosity and appreciation for different languages and cultures,” explained Ms. Kao, the coordinator of the event. 

Through this cultural celebration, our students expanded their horizons and embraced the diversity of our global community through the activities representing these different cultural traditions.
