Creating a Supportive Middle School Community
The start of the Middle School year at Taipei American School has been filled with energy and excitement as students and teachers are enjoying the start of another vibrant school year. At TAS, we believe that building a strong sense of community and fostering meaningful connections is essential for the well-being and success of our students. Through various bonding activities, assemblies, and extended homerooms, we aim to create a positive environment where every student feels valued and supported. When our Tigers know that they belong in our community, their learning is supercharged!
In the first week of school, students participated in grade-level assemblies where counselors and teachers shared advice and encouragement. Middle School Principal, Josh Budde, spoke to the Middle School, reminding students of the importance of making good choices, taking responsibility, and standing up for what is right. His message emphasized the power of words, highlighting that kindness and empathy should be at the core of all interactions—a foundational message rooted in our TAS values that will guide our students throughout their time at TAS.
During an extended homeroom, students and teachers discussed the impact of language and our shared responsibility in fostering a positive, inclusive community. They focused on using words to uplift others, speaking out against harmful language, and taking responsibility for their actions. The goal is to empower students to advocate for themselves and their peers, embodying kindness, respect, and integrity. These discussions encourage students to actively contribute to a culture that reflects their commitment to being students of character.
Looking ahead, the Middle School community is looking forward to the upcoming Middle School Camp trips, transformative bonding experience. Our Grade 6 students will spend four days in Kenting, engaging in outdoor activities that promote emotional, social, and physical development. Grade 7 students will head to Tainan, and Grade 8 students will venture to the northeast coast. These trips offer students the opportunity to connect with nature, build friendships, and develop a deeper understanding of themselves and others. Several camp information webinars will be available next week to keep parents and guardians informed.
In addition to Middle school Camp, our Middle School students have a wide range of athletic offerings and co-curricular opportunities to explore their interests and passions. From activities like Ceramics, Dance, and Competitive Bots to service-oriented clubs such as the Orphanage Club and Bulletin Board Beautification Club, there’s something for everyone. These activities typically take place on multiple days of the week after school and are designed to be both fun and educational, helping students form lasting friendships while learning in engaging ways. With clubs and activities now underway, it’s another chance for students to build deeper relationships with one another.
As we continue to build a supportive and caring Middle School community, we are excited for the year ahead and the many opportunities it will bring. Together, we will encourage our students to be kind, responsible, and confident individuals who contribute positively to the world around them!
