Creativity and Confidence at the Grade 3 Book Fair

Creativity and Confidence at the Grade 3 Book Fair

The Grade 3 Book Fair, held in the Lotus Lounge, brought students, parents, and teachers together for a celebration of learning, creativity, and student voice. Organized by Grade 3 teacher Ms. Irene Fang, the event showcased students’ self-authored expert books—nonfiction works that explored topics of their choice with depth and enthusiasm.

To kick off the project, students began by asking themselves, “What can I teach others about?” The result was a wide range of creative and engaging topics, including “How to Solve a Rubik’s Cube,” “Saving Pandas,” “How to Make Hamsters Not Bite,” “Professional Golf,” “Space,” “Sanrio Characters,” “Playing Soccer,” “How to Take Care of a Turtle,” and “Ballet.” Students organized their ideas into chapters, elaborated with details, and revised to improve their writing.

The integration of technology with literacy demonstrated how digital tools can enhance traditional literacy skills. With the guidance of our Technology & Design Coach, Mr. Alfredo Papaseit, students used Canva to design eye-catching posters that highlighted the main ideas of their chapters.

At the Book Fair, they shared persuasive presentations with rotating groups of parents, showcasing not only their writing but also their ability to communicate ideas clearly and confidently.

"This event gave our students a real audience for their writing," said Ms. Fang. "When they know their work will be read and appreciated, it motivates them to push themselves as writers and communicators. Seeing their confidence grow while sharing their learning is the most rewarding part of it all."

One student reflected on the process, saying, “I learned how to explain my ideas clearly and show my hard work. I liked telling my parents about my topic—especially how to care for a hamster!”

The Book Fair provided an authentic opportunity for students to celebrate their learning, build essential communication skills, and take pride in their achievements. Events like these reflect the collaborative and purposeful learning environment at Taipei American School, where students are encouraged to share their work with real audiences in interactive and engaging ways.

If you missed the Fair, we hope you caught a glimpse of the posters in the Lower School Lobby!
