Families Explore Language Learning at Lower School Mandarin Night

Families Explore Language Learning at Lower School Mandarin Night

On September 24, the Lower School Library transformed into a vibrant hub of discovery as nearly 200 families from Pre-K to Grade 5 gathered for Mandarin Night. The event, led by our 15 dedicated Mandarin teachers who support over 800 Lower School students each year, provided families with a hands-on opportunity to experience the energy and richness of our Mandarin language program.

Throughout the evening, families rotated through interactive stations, explored student work, and examined the teaching resources that guide daily Mandarin learning. Parents gained insights into how students build fluency step by step, while also strengthening connections with the teachers who guide them on this journey.

Mandarin Night was held in the K–12 Chinese Library, a one-of-a-kind resource among international schools worldwide. Lower School Mandarin Coordinator Caroline Hsu reminds us, “The Chinese Library resources provide indispensable support for the LS Mandarin program, helping to build students’ literacy proficiency.” Housing thousands of texts and digital resources, the library ensures that all learners, whether beginning Mandarin for the first time or studying at a heritage track level, have access to authentic, high-quality materials.

“Supporting language development is a community-wide commitment at TAS,” shared Rose Lai, K–12 Chinese Librarian. “What I love most about working here is the collaborative spirit. Together, we create an environment where language learning flourishes across subjects and grade levels.”

Mandarin Night reflects Taipei American School’s mission to cultivate lifelong learning, personal well-being, and service. By honoring the official language of our host country, Taiwan, our program provides students with meaningful opportunities to broaden their global perspectives and cultivate the courage and character necessary to make the world a better place.

Thank you to all the families who joined us to celebrate, support, and grow together as a community of learners.
