Kindergarten Students Explore Math Through Play at Math Mania

Kindergarten Students Explore Math Through Play at Math Mania

Last week, Kindergarten students participated in the highly anticipated Kindergarten Math Mania event, a celebration of math concepts through games and hands-on activities. Held on the Lower School field, this lively and engaging event brought math to life, fostering curiosity, teamwork, and fun for the young members of the TAS community.

Our Kindergarten students reviewed math concepts from Semester 1 with a variety of games and activities, each thoughtfully designed to reinforce learning while promoting engagement and collaboration.

The day began with an opening ceremony in the Kindergarten Cave, where students—dressed in vibrant team colors—gathered to create team names, design posters, and craft spirited chants. Carrying their enthusiasm onto the field, teams paraded proudly, ready to rotate through a variety of math focused stations designed by Kindergarten teachers.

The games transformed abstract math concepts into tangible and memorable experiences. In the “Pom-Pom Tally Challenge,” students shot pom-poms into containers, tallying their scores after each round to practice counting and addition. The “Catch ‘Em All” game involved running to collect numbered cards and filling a 10-frame with numbers from 1 to 10, sharpening number recognition and teamwork.

In “Flying Dinosaurs,” students tested their aim by launching dinosaurs along a number line, observing how far their dinosaurs could "fly" while connecting their results to numerical distances. Another hit was the “Blue Block Challenge,” where teams rolled dice to build towering block structures and carefully transported them across the field, practicing measurement and balance.

The “Counting Relay” brought movement into math, as students navigated obstacle courses while adding bean bags to a tens frame, reinforcing addition and understanding of place value. Meanwhile, the “Obstacle Course Pizza Box Game” creatively taught spatial awareness and prepositions through navigating a wooden doll around a maze of shapes.

Ms. Katie O’Gorman, the Lower School Math Coordinator, emphasized the philosophy behind the event: “Math Mania is about making math fun, active, and meaningful. When students are immersed in playful, hands-on activities, they gain confidence and see math as part of their everyday lives. Events like this spark joy and curiosity, which are essential in a child’s learning journey.”

Each game was carefully designed to align with current math units while promoting problem-solving, communication, and collaboration. Teachers and teaching assistants guided students through the stations, ensuring every child felt supported and celebrated. “It’s incredible to see students working together to solve problems and cheering each other on. They’re not just learning math—they’re building connections and learning how to be part of a team,” O’Gorman added.

The event concluded in the Kindergarten Cave, where students enjoyed a special treat and shared highlights from the day with their friends and teachers. Amid laughter and cheers, they reflected on their efforts and celebrated the joy of learning together. Math Mania demonstrated how learning can be an enjoyable, hands-on experience, showing students that math is more than memorization—it’s about applying concepts and skills in engaging and practical ways.
