Middle School House Program Builds Enthusiasm and Community Spirit!
The beginning of September brought a wave of excitement to the Middle School as Grade 6 students and new Grade 7 and 8 students received their House invitations during homeroom. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as students uncovered their House affiliations in imaginative ways—some through the magic of a Sorting Hat activity, while others unraveled the mystery from a Box of Mystery. These creative reveals set the stage for a year filled with connection and spirited competition.
On Wednesday, September 11, all Middle School students gathered for their first House meetings of the school year, where they were introduced to the unique characteristics and values of their respective Houses: the Formosa Black Bears, Taiwan Pit Vipers, Taiwan Blue Magpies, and Asian Giant Hornets.
During these meetings, teachers explained the significance behind each House, outlining expectations and introducing spirited House cheers. These initial gatherings laid a solid foundation for a year rich in community building.
Inspired by a model familiar to many through the Harry Potter series, the House Program aims to create a sense of belonging by fostering connections across different grade levels. This year marks the first full implementation of the program after years of planning. The Middle School’s approach is distinctive, with Houses designed to nurture relationships beyond daily routines while providing students with mentorship and leadership opportunities.
One of the core values of the TAS House Program is belonging. All Middle School students and teachers are assigned to one of the four Houses, creating a diverse and supportive environment. Family members are kept in the same House, and once assigned, students remain in their House throughout their Middle School years, ensuring continuity and deepening bonds.
Unlike traditional House programs that may reward or penalize academic performance, TAS’s House Program focuses exclusively on friendly competition. Points are earned through participation in various events, with the ultimate goal of maximizing involvement from all House members, regardless of individual skills. This emphasis on participation ensures that everyone has a role to play in their House’s success, promoting teamwork and school spirit.
As the school year progresses, students will continue to participate in a variety of House activities designed to strengthen these bonds and create lasting memories. Each event and tournament are carefully crafted to encourage collaboration and enthusiasm. The House Program is not just about winning; it’s about making connections, building community, and fostering a sense of pride in being part of something larger than oneself.
Let the games continue, as the Formosa Black Bears, Taiwan Pit Vipers, Taiwan Blue Magpies, and Asian Giant Hornets strive to become this year’s House Champions!
