Milestones and New Beginnings in Lower School

Last week, Lower School students marked milestones of their own as Kindergarten students prepared for Grade 1 and Grade 5 students prepared for the transition to Middle School. Though separated by several years, both celebrations reflected the same themes of growth, reflection, and new beginnings. 

Speaking during one of the Grade 5 Promotion Ceremonies in the Harmony Theater, Interim Lower School Principal Ms. Becky Klar reflected on the many milestones students experience throughout their TAS journey.

"Last weekend, many of us sat together in the Upper School gym watching our seniors graduate, applauding as they crossed a stage that probably felt impossibly far away when they first arrived at TAS. A few days later, our Grade 5 students marked the end of their Lower School journey, and this morning our Kindergarten students celebrated their transition to Grade 1. On Monday, we will gather once more to celebrate Grade 8 students as they prepare to step into something new."

For Kindergarten students, the recognition celebration provided an opportunity to share songs and poems reflecting on their year of learning and discovery. Families joined students in celebrating the completion of the Kindergarten program before students received certificates recognizing their readiness for Grade 1. The morning highlighted the confidence, independence, and curiosity students have developed throughout the year while offering families a chance to reflect on just how much their children have grown.

Earlier in the week, Grade 5 students gathered in the Harmony Theater for a series of promotion ceremonies marking the completion of their Lower School experience. Student speakers shared favorite memories, including Taiwan Day, camp experiences, Halloween celebrations, the Flea Market, and the everyday joy of spending time with friends. Together, these moments painted a picture of a class that had learned, grown, and built lasting connections throughout their time in Lower School.

Adding a personal dimension to the celebrations, families contributed baby photos that were incorporated into the ceremonies. The images offered students, families, and teachers a chance to look back on how much had changed since those early childhood years and underscored the significance of the transition ahead.

In her remarks, Ms. Klar thanked the Grade 5 team for organizing the celebrations and emphasized the importance of taking time to recognize students’ accomplishments.

“Today gives us an important opportunity to pause together and reflect on how much our students have grown over the years as learners, classmates, leaders, and members of our community before they begin the exciting transition to Middle School.” 

The sense of community that has shaped student’s Lower School experience was also evident throughout the ceremonies. One student speaker thanked teachers, teaching assistants, counselors, administrators, security staff, and the many others who had supported students along the way, noting that “it truly takes a village” to help children learn and grow.

The Grade 5 celebrations continued later in the week with the Recognition Performing Arts Concert in Guy Lott Jr. Auditorium, providing another opportunity for students and families to come together and celebrate the culmination of their Lower School years.

Together, the Kindergarten and Grade 5 celebrations served as reminders that every stage of a student’s TAS journey brings milestones worth recognizing. Whether taking their first steps into elementary school or preparing for Middle School, students were celebrated for what they had achieved, but for the growth, relationships, and sense of belonging they developed along the way.
