New Families Find Community at PTA Welcome Party

New Families Find Community at PTA Welcome Party

On Friday, August 29, Taipei American School’s Legacy Commons was filled with warm conversations and laughter as the PTA hosted the annual New Family Party. Designed to help families new to TAS feel connected and informed, and welcomed into the community.

This year, TAS welcomed 271 new families, each bringing fresh energy and perspectives to the school. “TAS is the bridge from an island to the world. PTA is the bridge from families to TAS,” shared the PTA New Family Liaisons. “Every summer, PTA is like a flight crew standing by the cabin door, ready to welcome new passengers on board. In their eyes, we see both the excitement of joining TAS and a touch of nervousness. With open hearts, PTA helps new families quickly feel at home in the TAS community.”

Parents and guardians were seated by grade level, sparking conversations that ranged from sharing school stories to navigating life in Tianmu. When families looked a little shy or alone, PTA members were quick to step in, ensuring that every parent felt seen, supported, and cared for.

In addition to personal connections, community service partners such as The Center were on hand to answer questions and meet new families. The Center has long supported Taipei’s international community through counseling, cultural classes, and practical guidance. For families new to Taiwan, The Center offers another layer of welcome and support alongside the TAS community.

The evening also featured a lively round of TAS trivia, where families learned more about school history and traditions, and playful appearances from the TAS Tiger added an extra spark of joy. Families enjoyed light refreshments and received TAS calendars and coin bags. Tiger Shop merchandise was also on hand, with several items selling out quickly as new families proudly picked up their first pieces of TAS spirit gear.

Beyond the fun of the night, the PTA shared information about upcoming events, including Back to School Nights and the highly anticipated Fall Fair on November 15. For many families, it was their first introduction to TAS’s vibrant calendar of community events. The PTA also highlighted opportunities for continued connection through cultural and parent groups, including the CPMG, Korean, Japanese, and Indian groups.

“We were thrilled to see so many families join the Welcome Party,” the New Family Liaisons reflected. “Each new family adds to the rich mix of cultures and backgrounds at TAS. Together, we learn from one another and share life’s journey side by side. We are honored to be the bridge that connects families to the TAS experience. We are proud to be a Tigers!”

The New Family Party not only eased the transition for incoming families but also reflected TAS’s mission of cultivating well-being, belonging, and service. By beginning the year with such a joyful gathering, the PTA underscored the belief that kindness and connection are the foundation of a thriving community.
