The Voices of Tomorrow: TAS Students Inspire National Attention

The Voices of Tomorrow: TAS Students Inspire National Attention

Two Grade 6 students at Taipei American School, Ziva (‘31) and Kaitlyn (‘31), have demonstrated how classroom learning can inspire real-world change. Their Mandarin class project on empathy, led by Ms. Pearl Lin, encouraged students to think about how to promote kindness and understanding in their communities.

While many classmates designed creative projects such as posters and skits, Ziva and Kaitlyn chose to write letters to Taiwan’s government. Their letters highlighted challenges faced by people with vision and hearing impairments and proposed practical solutions for improving accessibility.

"Empathy is about more than understanding—it’s about taking meaningful action,” said Ms. Lin. “Ziva and Kaitlyn’s approach showed a deep commitment to making a difference."

Their efforts were met with official recognition. At the start of the school year, the Presidential Office and related government departments responded to the girls’ proposals, commending their initiative and thoughtful suggestions.

Reflecting on the experience, Ziva and Kaitlyn shared how receiving the responses validated their work. “We wanted to make things better for everyone,” they said. “Hearing back made us feel like our voices were heard.”

Ms. Lin emphasized the broader impact of this project: “This experience shows students that their ideas, no matter how young they are, can lead to meaningful change.”

TAS’s commitment to nurturing empathy and service shines through in stories like this. Ziva and Kaitlyn’s work serves as a powerful reminder of the potential within every student to contribute to a better world.

This initiative underscores the importance of education that extends beyond textbooks, empowering students to think critically and act compassionately to make a positive impact.
