Upper School Tigers Show Spirit at Field Day

The energy was real. The spirit was louder. On Friday, September 26, the Upper School gathered for its annual Field Day, a celebration of teamwork, friendly competition, and community pride. 

In the days leading up to the event, a typhoon passing through the south of Taiwan had the community worried that Field Day might be cancelled for the second consecutive year. The school had been forced to cancel twice the previous year due to a typhoon and heavy rain, and many hoped this year would not bring another disappointment. By Friday morning, however, the skies began to clear, the sun broke through, and students were able to gather outdoors with renewed excitement. 

The day kicked off in the courtyard, where students enjoyed pizza served by their class officers before heading into the Middle School gym for the spirited opening ceremony. The atmosphere was electric: drums echoed across the gym, flags waved, and each grade proudly delivered a class cheer. A lighthearted fashion show and a giant game of Simon Says set the tone for the afternoon, drawing laughter, applause, and plenty of school spirit. 

Students then moved into a rotation of advisory and class competitions. Indoors, advisories played games like Mario Kart Relay, Pictionary, Guess the Person, and Guess the Song. Outdoors, the competition continued with water pump soccer, water balloon toss, the Holey Bucket relay, and the Drift Relay. Class games featured Dress to Impress, Simon Says, and Dinosaur Relay. Final scoring combined 60 percent from advisory games and 40 percent from class competitions, making every effort count. 

When the scores were tallied, the Class of 2026 (Grade 12) claimed the top spot, followed by the Class of 2027 (Grade 11), the Class of 2028 (Grade 10), and the Class of 2029 (Grade 9). The excitement in the gym during the announcement of winners underscored the excitement of the day. Field Day is a highlight of the school year because it combines competition with community, creates lasting memories, and allows Tigers to celebrate their spirit together. 

Field Day has become a cherished tradition in the Upper School, one that students eagerly anticipate as an opportunity to celebrate class pride, deepen friendships, and connect across grade levels. After a year without it, returning to the games brought a renewed sense of gratitude and joy. 

More than just fun and games, Field Day reflects Taipei American School’s mission and learning outcomes. The cheers, team strategies, and cooperative challenges highlight our students as collaborative communicators. The shared spirit and celebration of community support their personal well-being and show what it means to be well-balanced individuals. Together, the students lived out the values of connection, character, and belonging. 

Congratulations to all participants, and a special thank you to the Student Government and the Student Government Ambassadors for organizing a memorable day for the Upper School. Appreciation also goes to the faculty and advisory leaders who guided students throughout the activities, as well as the facilities and other teams whose behind-the-scenes efforts made the day possible.
