Our Masterplanning Process

Designing Learning Spaces for Today and Tomorrow

Masterplanning at TAS is about re-envisioning our entire campus for the future of learning and for the level of excellence we aspire to as a school. It is a comprehensive, long-term process that looks beyond individual buildings to consider how every space across campus can support great teaching, deep learning, and the kind of student experience that defines a leading institution.

Rather than approaching facilities as a series of isolated projects, we are taking a cohesive view of the full campus experience, from classrooms and collaborative learning environments to outdoor spaces, community areas, and student support hubs. Through research, design, and community engagement, we are defining how our physical environment can more intentionally support learning, innovation, well-being, belonging, and the evolving needs of our students and educators.

At the conclusion of this process, we will have a clear, long-term construction roadmap for the entire campus, a phased plan that guides future development and investment in a thoughtful and strategic way. This ensures that each step forward is part of a larger, future-focused vision, one that reflects our commitment to excellence, strengthens our sense of community, and positions TAS to continue to be a great school for generations to come.

Why This Work Matters 

At Taipei American School, we believe that an enduring education is shaped not only by what happens in the classroom, but by the environments in which it takes place. The spaces our students move through each day influence how they connect, how they think, and how they grow as learners and individuals.

Transforming our campus is about creating the conditions for deep learning. It is also about designing spaces that reflect the level of excellence we expect in teaching and learning, and that position our students to thrive in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. As we look to the future, we are approaching this work as a long-term, phased masterplanning process, one that honors the legacy of TAS while thoughtfully preparing for the evolving needs of our students and community.

Rosan Bosch Studio

We are proud to partner with Rosan Bosch Studio, an internationally recognized design firm known for its work in reimagining learning environments. Their approach is grounded in a simple but powerful idea: that spaces should support how people learn, feel, and connect. Rather than beginning with design solutions, their process begins with listening and observing how students and educators use spaces, engaging in dialogue, and uncovering the patterns that shape daily life in a school. Together, we are exploring how our campus can better support well-being, collaboration, creativity, and purpose, ensuring that our physical environment reflects the kind of learning experience we aspire to provide.

Key Projects

This first phase of our construction projects will focus on these four
high-impact areas.

PROJECT 1: Lower School Cafeteria & Community Room
Fueling Learning, Strengthening Community

A new Lower School Cafeteria & Community Room designed to serve our youngest learners with warmth, independence, and wellness in mind—complete with two flexible meeting spaces to support connection across our school community. This facility will be designed to be far more than a dining hall—it will be a vibrant, dynamic space where students build community, develop lifelong healthy habits, and foster independence in an environment tailored specifically to their needs.​

The Lower School Cafeteria & Community Room will be built into the ground floor of the Winston Wong Tech Cube.​

In addition to being a vital space for our Lower School students during the day, the dining grove will also serve as a multi-purpose venue for a variety of events, meetings, conferences, and community gatherings. Its flexible design will make it a central location for the broader TAS community, supporting the School's mission to bring together students, families, and employees in a unified environment.

PROJECT 2: Middle School Playground
A Space to Play, A Place to Belong

A new dedicated Middle School Playground, purpose-built to support the physical and social-emotional needs of early adolescents in a vibrant, age-appropriate environment.

The creation of a dedicated Middle School outdoor playground and space will be designed specifically for our Middle School students to enjoy play, relaxation, and social interaction. ​

This space will be a hub of for our Middle School students.​

Located just next to the new Lower School Cafeteria and Community Room, this area will be specifically tailored to meet the needs of our Middle School students, fostering both their physical well-being and their social connections in a fun, modern environment they’ll be eager to spend time in.

PROJECT 3: Welcome Lobby
Where Every Welcome Reflects our Values

A redesigned Welcome Lobby that reflects who we are as a school––student-centered and committed to innovation and care from the moment someone walks through our doors.

The welcome hall will be more than an entry point—it will be a space of welcome, pride, and belonging, where students feel energized, families feel proud, and every guest instantly sees and feels what makes TAS exceptional.​

With purposeful design elements like light, color, student work, and flexible gathering spaces, the hall will become more than a pass-through. It will be a place where students connect, hang out, and start their day with energy and confidence.

PROJECT 4: Office of Learning
A Home for Collaboration and Innovation

A redesigned Office of Learning that brings academic leadership into clearer view, better supports collaboration, and aligns with our values as a dynamic and forward-thinking learning institution.

We are re-imagining our Central Administrative Offices into the Office of Learning––a vibrant, collaborative hub where leadership, innovation, and community will come together.

The Office of Learning will dissolve traditional boundaries between "administration" and "academics," creating dynamic spaces where ideas are shared, connections are built, and learning leadership is visible and accessible to all.​

Open collaboration zones, co-working spaces, flexible team areas, and smaller offices will support creativity, innovation, and accessibility in ways that reflect the future of education.

This year, our work has deepened through the formation of a dedicated Master Planning Taskforce, bringing together representatives from across the TAS community.

A Shared Process

From the very beginning, this work has been shaped by the voices of our community. Over the past year, students, parents, faculty, staff, administrators, and board members have participated in a wide range of focus groups, dialogue sessions, and workshops, sharing perspectives rooted in lived experience across every division of the school. These conversations have been about asking meaningful questions: how learning unfolds, how spaces are experienced, and what matters most in the daily life of TAS. As student Effie C. '26 reflects, being part of this process has meant offering ideas and contributing to a shared vision for the future of our school.

The Process 

A Journey Shaped by Listening, Learning, and Looking Forward 

One of the most meaningful aspects of this process has been the opportunity to gather ideas from across the community and reflect on them collectively. Feedback, observations, and proposals have come from every corner of campus, through workshops, dialogue sessions, and student-led projects. These contributions are not viewed in isolation, but as part of a broader pattern of insight that helps guide the direction of the work.
