Reading & Writing Extension - Grades 4 & 5

In this course the student will be inspired and challenged to read and write in a variety of genres. Some of the genres they may explore are odes, memoirs, fantasy, literary essay, and historical fiction. We will read mentor texts and look at how the literary elements are used, such as foreshadowing, flashbacks, cliffhangers and more. To deepen our comprehension skills, we will have book club discussions, share reviews and work on a story project.

With a focus on the writing process and craft techniques, students may try writing in different genres, using their writing notebooks. Students will publish a variety of pieces. Furthermore, we will have fun investigating the use of punctuation and grammar through a variety of activities. As you can see, students will learn to read like writers and write like the authors they admire. If you love to read and write stories, this class is for you.
