Richard Gill was the Education Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Director of the Victorian Opera and West Australian Conservatorium, as well as the Chorus Master of Opera Australia. He was the 2017-2018 Artist in Residence.

TAS welcomes Richard Gill as the 2017-2018 Joanna Nichols Performing Artist in Residence. In April 2018 he will spend three weeks with upper school students and the Community Choir, the Upper School Orchestra, and Sun Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Haydn's Missa in Angustiis (Mass in Times of Trouble) during the Arts Festival. He will also conduct the Upper School String Orchestra as they perform G. F. Handel's Concerto Grosso in B-flat Major Op. 6 No. 7.

2017-2018 is Mr. Gill’s fifth visit to Taipei American School. In 2017 upper school musicians worked with Mr. Gill to prepare the concert Traditions and Celebrations, which featured a choral a cappella retrospective and Beethoven’s 2nd Symphony. During his visit in 2016, he worked with upper school students and the Community Choir, Orchestra, and Sun Taipei Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Mozart's Requiem. In addition, he engaged with lower and middle school students, creating unforgettable musical experiences. In 2014-2015, Mr. Gill spent one week with upper school musicians in preparation for the culminating performance, From Venice to London. In 2013-2014, he spent a week on campus and brought the community together for the performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.

At the culmination of the performance in 2016, Mr. Gill shared these words,

“It is through dance, music, drama, and visual arts the imagination takes fire, the creative thinkers of the world are born, and great imaginations have a habit of infecting the world in a very fine way. All these children will do that; they have the capacity to do that. And it happens for two reasons: an enlightened administration supporting an enlightened faculty. Long live arts education at TAS.”

The entire TAS community is thrilled to have such a distinguished educator as Richard Gill on campus for five straight years.
