The TAS Athletics Hall of Fame Welcomes Five Inductees

Three members of the Class of 2022 along with two legendary coaches have been inducted into the TAS Athletics Hall of Fame.

This year’s class includes volleyball standouts Angelina C. and Kimberly H., record-breaking track & field hurdler Maud Z., and long-tenured coaches Kathy Cutler and Brian Tobey.

ANGELINA C. - Volleyball

With 353 kills over the first three years of her varsity career, Angelina was on pace to become the TAS career leader prior to the COVID-19 pandemic preventing all interscholastic competition in her senior year. She was equally dominant on the defensive end with 340 total digs and 502 quality serve receptions. In her junior year, Angelina posted incredible ratios of 181 digs to 29 errors and 211 quality serve receptions to 33 errors. The starting outside hitter for the 2019 IASAS champion squad, Angelina also led the Tigers to a second place finish in the Sanchong Cup in 2020. Angelina also earned Four-Year IASAS honors for Season 3 sports with two years each on the track & field and softball teams and was named IASAS Scholar three times.

KIMBERLY H. - Volleyball

The best setter in school history, Kimberly changed the way TAS girls volleyball was played with her blistering tempo and a selection of combo plays that did not exist in the program prior to her tenure. In addition to her setting prowess, Kimberly tallied 80 career service aces and also contributed defensively with 18 career block kills. She was a key member of the 2019 IASAS title-winning squad and also led her team to a second-place finish at the Sanchong Cup in 2020. Kimberly was a Four-Year IASAS honoree and earned co-MVP honors in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022.

MAUD Z. - Track & Field

Maud was an IASAS champion, three-time MVP, and the top hurdler in school history. She holds school records in both the 100m and 400m hurdles, and both marks are elite: her 100m hurdle mark of 15.43 seconds is seven-hundredths of a second better than the IASAS record time and her 400m hurdle time (1 minute, 6.13 seconds) would have captured IASAS gold in seven of the last eight years. A Four-Year IASAS honoree, Maud was a member of the 2019 squad that captured IASAS gold on its home track and went on to be named co-MVP her sophomore year in 2020 and MVP in 2021 and 2022. A three-sport athlete and a four-time IASAS Scholar honoree, Maud was also a standout on the soccer and touch fields.

COACH KATHY CUTLER - Volleyball

A model of sportsmanship with an unrivaled passion for player development, Kathy Cutler led her teams to 14 IASAS medals—including six gold medals—as varsity girls volleyball head coach from 1984-2009. She retired as the longest tenured coach in TAS history with 39 years of coaching that spanned the tenures of seven different athletic directors. Ms. Cutler led her teams to IASAS titles in 1989-1990, 1995-1996, 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2001-2002, as well as 2008-2009, her final season as varsity head coach. Ms. Cutler also served as a TAS Health & Physical Education instructor from 1984-2022 and was Associate Athletics & Activities Director from 1996-2012.

COACH BRIAN TOBEY - Volleyball & Badminton

Brian Tobey retires with numerous TAS Athletics coaching records, including longest IASAS medal streak (18), longest IASAS title-winning streak (14), and most IASAS gold medals (22). Mr. Tobey led the varsity girls badminton team to 17 gold medals and one silver from 1999-2017, including 14 straight titles to close out his stint with that program. He also led his teams to five gold medals and 15 total medals as head varsity boys volleyball coach from 1995-2010 and 2013-2018. Mr. Tobey coached both his daughter, Dani, and son, Jack, on varsity volleyball teams and won back-to-back IASAS championships in 2016 and 2017. In addition to his contributions to TAS sports teams as a coach, Mr. Tobey also taught Health & Physical Education for 30 years (1991-2022).

Eight Tigers Inducted into TAS Athletics Hall of Fame

Eight members of the Class of 2021 will be inducted into the TAS Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the TAS Upper School Sports Celebration on Friday, May 7.

This year’s Hall of Fame class includes volleyball and basketball standout Sabrina C., softball slugger Sabrina H., volleyball and softball inductee Sarah J., record-breaking swimmers Hironori K. and Jason L., tennis competitor Alex L., track & field throws record-holder Maya R., and badminton star Richard W.

SABRINA C. - Volleyball & Basketball

Sabrina C. excelled at the opposite hitter spot over her four-year IASAS volleyball career with 441 kills and 178 service aces and earned IASAS All-Tournament honors as co-MVP of the Tigers’ 2019 title-winning squad in addition to earning 2018 Coach’s Choice honors and serving as co-captain in 2020. Sabrina was equally impressive on the basketball court, where the Tigers won a gold medal in 2018 with Sabrina as a key freshman contributor and Spirit of IASAS awardee. Sabrina was a two-time captain, four-time MVP, and a versatile scorer and playmaker, posting a record 41 double-doubles, the third highest point total (1,445) in program history, and the second highest rebounding total (951) in recent history. Sabrina, also a softball standout, was a Triple Four-Year IASAS awardee.

SABRINA H. - Softball

Sabrina H. was the consummate No. 3 hitter during a stellar four-year IASAS softball career in which she hit for power and average and was also a strong defensive presence at third base. During the Tigers’ 2019 IASAS silver medal run, Sabrina hit .579 with six runs and 12 RBI. As Coach’s Choice honoree and co-captain her senior year, Sabrina posted a team-high .524 batting average and .583 on-base percentage and ended her career as the all-time leader in hits (39) and RBI (31).

SARAH J. - Volleyball & Softball

Sarah J. was an extremely efficient middle hitter with a career hitting percentage of 29 percent, including a 41 percent stretch in earning All-Tournament honors as the Tigers’ co-MVP during their 2019 gold medal run at the IASAS Volleyball Championships. Sarah, who was named co-captain as a senior, also tallied 106 block kills over the course of her varsity career. As the cleanup hitter, two-time MVP, and four-year IASAS participant on the softball diamond, Sarah J. earned IASAS All-Tournament honors as a sophomore on the Tigers’ silver medal-winning squad. As a senior captain, she hit the first over-the-fence home run in program history, then proceeded to hit two more to close out the season. Sarah was also a stalwart basketball player and earned the Spirit of IASAS award at the 2018 IASAS Basketball Championships.

HIRONORI K. - Swimming

Hironori K. finished his outstanding four-year IASAS swimming career as a four-time MVP and four-year IASAS participant with seven TAS swimming records in individual events and three relay records: the 50m butterfly and freestyle, 100m backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle, and the 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke records as well as the 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, and 400m medley relay records. The two-time captain earned a 2019 IASAS gold in the 50m butterfly and a 2020 gold in the 100m butterfly, and the Tigers won back-to-back team gold medals in 2018 and 2019 followed by a bronze in 2020.

ALEX L. - Tennis

Alex L., a two-time boys tennis captain and MVP and four-year IASAS participant, put in a dominating career performance at IASAS events with a 13-4 overall record at three IASAS championship events and a 10-2 record at IASAS exchanges. In 2019, Alex was honored with the Spirit of IASAS award for his exemplary interaction with his host family, and he earned All-Tournament honors in powering his team to the bronze medal the following year.

JASON L. - Swimming

Jason L. left his mark on both the TAS and IASAS swimming record books with school and conference records in the 100m and 200m breaststroke as well as the 400m medley relay. Jason was also a part of record-setting 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 400m medley relay teams, and the Tigers won IASAS gold medals in 2018 and 2019 and a bronze in 2020. A one-time Coach’s Choice awardee, two-time captain, three-time MVP, and four-year IASAS participant, Jason won three IASAS individual gold medals in 2019 and three more in 2020.

MAYA R. - Track & Field

Maya R. sealed her place in TAS track & field lore by capturing the throwing trifecta with school records in the shot put (10.11 meters), discus (30.40m), and javelin (33.50m). A one-time track & field MVP and Coach’s Choice honoree, Maya set the javelin record as a freshman at the IASAS Track & Field Championships, the discus record in 2020 and again in 2021, and also captured the shot put record as a senior team captain. Also an accomplished soccer and basketball player, Maya was a Triple Four-Year IASAS award winner.

RICHARD W. - Badminton

Richard W. was a two-time MVP, three-year captain, and four-year IASAS participant for the boys badminton team who was known for always being up to the challenge of competing with other high-level players. He captured All-Tournament honors at No. 3 singles as a freshman in the Tigers’ silver medal performance at the 2018 IASAS Badminton Championships.

The Class of 2021 inductees will be honored and the Outstanding Senior Athlete and IASAS Scholar recipients will also be announced at the Hall of Fame Induction & Major Awards Ceremony (invite-only due to COVID-19 protocols), which kicks off 2021 US Sports Celebration festivities at 5:00PM Friday, May 7 in Joie Gymnasium. 

Team celebrations will then be held at the below on-campus venues where program coaches will present MVP and/or Coach’s Choice awards to their honorees. GO TIGERS!
