Girls volleyball bests SAS to earn gold and girls cross country grabs silver

The varsity girls volleyball team’s gold medal-winning effort—the program’s first since 2008—and the girls cross country team’s silver highlighted a series of admirable performances from TAS Season 1 varsity sports teams at the Super IASAS Championship event held at International School Manila Oct. 10-12.

The girls volleyball team’s relentless energy, stout defense and decisive attack prevented the Eagles of Singapore American School from ever posing a serious threat in the tournament final—a rematch of the 2018 championship game—as the Tigers steamrolled to a 3-0 victory. The Tigers dropped just two sets in the tournament and left no doubt as to which team was tops in this year’s field.

Sarahi Z.R. (‘20) and Evelyn L. (‘20) endured stifling temperatures in Manila to finish second and fifth, respectively, in both the 5K and 3K races of the IASAS Cross Country Championships in powering the Tigers to a silver medal. Dylan C. (‘22) led the boys’ fourth place effort in finishing fifth in the 5K and sixth in the 3K.

The boys soccer team proved to be one of the most entertaining squads of the tournament as they played a barnburner of a match in earning a 3-3 draw versus JIS in pool play then defeated SAS 1-0 to edge the Tigers’ way into the bronze medal match, a rematch with the Dragons of JIS. The Tigers drew first blood when a beautiful strike from distance off the foot of Tyler L. (‘23) found the back of the net in the sixth minute, but JIS clawed back and captured the victory 2-1.

Another moment of pride for the TAS athletic program came when Logan C. (‘20) was honored with the Spirit of IASAS award for sacrificing precious seconds of his own finishing time in order to tend to a runner who had collapsed due to the heat. Logan’s display of selflessness rightfully earned him the conference’s coveted award of character.

The girls soccer team narrowly missed out on a berth in the bronze medal match and finished fifth, as did the boys volleyball team after it defeated JIS in the 5-vs-6 game on Saturday.

7 of 8 teams earn bronze medals at season 2 IASAS events

All eight Season 2 TAS teams emerged victorious from their final contest—perhaps not the final they had hoped for—at Season 2 IASAS events Jan. 30-Feb. 1 in Bangkok, Jakarta, and Singapore.

The boys and girls basketball and tennis teams in addition to the touch team all endured in their respective third place games to take home bronze medals. The swimming teams also earned bronze, and the rugby team walked off the field with a victory over Jakarta Intercultural School to take home fifth place.

The seven Season 2 medals were a school best, eclipsing the previous high of six posted in 2001 and 2009. Congratulations to all of our Tigers on going out with a victory!

All Season 3 IASAS Exchanges and Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Season 1 IASAS Exchanges

The TAS boys and girls varsity cross country, soccer, and volleyball teams gained valuable experience at IASAS Exchanges in Thailand and here in Taipei this weekend in preparation for the Season 1 IASAS Championships next month. The varsity girls volleyball team steamrolled through the IASAS Volleyball Exchange (North) field in winning all three of their matches while dropping just one set before dropping the final in five sets to No. 2 seed Bangkok Sport School. The varsity boys volleyball team started 0-3 but finished strong with a victory in the 3-vs-4 match in Bangkok.

A number of boys and girls varsity cross country runners delivered stellar times in the ultra-competitive Thailand Cross Country Invitational 5K race on Saturday. The varsity boys team took home the team title with both Eli K. (‘22; sixth place) and Dylan C. (‘22; seventh) finishing among the top 10. Sarahi Z.R. (‘20; second), Evelyn L. (‘20; sixth), and Enya T. (‘23; 10th) all ran strong races as the girls team finished second to SAS in a deep field. 

The varsity boys soccer team finished with a 1-1-1 record with a victory over New Taipei Senior High to close out its weekend on the Lower Field. The varsity girls soccer team finished with a gritty, rain-soaked 2-0 victory over ISB after dropping its first two matches.

Recap: 2019 IASAS Rugby Exchange at TAS

The TAS varsity rugby team emerged with a 2-3 finish from a challenging 2019 IASAS Rugby Exchange featuring matchups with all five IASAS rival schools on the Tigers’ home turf.

The Tigers opened the exchange on Friday afternoon with 46-0 loss to the International School Manila Bearcats, who went on to defeat the other four conference rivals by a combined score of 148-25. TAS rebounded to earn a 43-0 victory over Jakarta Intercultural School on Friday evening. TAS kicked off the Saturday action with a hard-fought 15-12 victory over International School Bangkok in a spirited seesaw affair.

After two days of intense competition the Tigers—undermanned like much of the field—dropped their final two matches, first to Singapore American School by the score of 22-5 then 22-0 to the International School of Kuala Lumpur, whose only loss of the weekend came against the dominant side from Manila.

The varsity boys basketball team went 3-0 with two wins over Shanghai American School Puxi and the varsity girls basketball team went 2-1 at the TAS Basketball Exchange.

All Season 3 IASAS Exchanges and Championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The TAS varsity boys and girls basketball teams each reached their respective championship games at the 2019 Holiday Basketball Invitational at TAS and made the home crowd proud with second-place finishes over Thanksgiving break.

The girls team fell to the American School of Bangkok 61-32 in the finals after rolling through round-robin and into the finals with a 6-0 record that included a two-point victory over the imposing ASB squad and a 20-point victory over Singapore American School in a rematch of last year’s IASAS championship game. Sabrina C. (‘21) and Sarah J. (‘21) earned all-tournament honors for the Tigers. Sabrina reached the 1000-point milestone in the final game of round-robin play on Day 2. This was the fourth consecutive year that the Tigers had earned a spot in the finals in this highly competitive tournament.

The TAS boys emerged from round-robin play with the No. 3 seed and defeated defending IASAS champion SAS in the semifinals to earn a berth in the tournament’s championship game for the second time in three years. The Tigers battled the St. Mary’s Titans to overtime before eventually falling 67-60. All-tournament honors went to Wayne Lee (‘21) and Devan C. (‘21). Ethan H. (‘21) captured the 3-point shootout title.

The TAS community was happy to take on the tournament on a one-year basis from Hong Kong International school—which has hosted the tournament for 49 years—after the event was relocated due to the current situation in the Fragrant Harbour.

The 2020 TAS Track & Field Exchange featuring visiting student-athletes from Ivy Collegiate Academy, Morrison Academy Kaohsiung and Morrison Academy Taichung took place March 13 and 14 on the Lower Field.

Record-tying five Season 1 teams medal at IASAS championship events in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore

In one of the strongest across-the-board performances at Season 1 IASAS Championship events in school history, a record-tying five TAS teams brought home medals from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. The varsity girls soccer team, varsity boys cross country team, and both the varsity boys and girls volleyball teams earned silver medals. The varsity girls cross country team’s bronze accounted for the Tigers’ fifth overall medal, while the varsity boys soccer team came away from a difficult tournament with a sixth-place finish. 

Never before had four TAS Season 1 teams earned silver or better, and it was the second time ever—and, remarkably, the second consecutive year—that five of six TAS teams were able to bring home medals from Season 1 IASAS events.

TAS teams battled until the very end and in a number of events, gold was just out of the Tigers’ grasp. At the IASAS Soccer Championships, the girls soccer team entered the final as the top seed for the first time in TAS history. The Tigers played host Singapore American School to a scoreless stalemate until an Eagles goal brought the tournament to a close with under four minutes remaining in sudden death overtime. 

In Kuala Lumpur, the boys volleyball team led 10-8 in the fifth and final set of their gold medal match versus International School Bangkok before the momentum swung to the Panthers, who closed out the set on a 7-2 run to claim the championship. 

The boys cross country team came up just short in the team trial event on the second and final day of competition, causing them to come out on the wrong end of a three-way tie for first place and settle for silver on a tiebreaker. The girls volleyball team showed grit in a four-set loss to SAS in its gold medal match.

While the TAS community is extremely proud of our teams’ performances at this season’s events, of greater importance was the sportsmanship and character displayed by our student-athletes. Success Across the Board

Five Season 2 teams medal; all eight teams finish fourth or better for first time in school history

TAS sports teams put forth an extraordinary collective effort at IASAS Championship events in earning five Season 2 medals for the first time since 2010. The varsity boys swimming team led the way by bringing home its second consecutive IASAS title on the strength of a number of record-smashing performances in Manila. The varsity girls basketball team cruised to the championship game but were forced to settle for a silver medal after losing a heartbreaker to host Singapore American School.

The varsity boys basketball team overcame injury to bring its fourth straight bronze medal back from Singapore. The varsity girls tennis team’s bronze in Bangkok was its first medal since 2013 and the varsity rugby team came away from Kuala Lumpur with its third bronze in four years.

The varsity boys tennis team, the varsity touch team and the varsity girls swimming team ended up in fourth place in their respective tournaments Jan. 31-Feb. 2, marking the first time in school history that all eight Season 2 teams were able to place fourth or better. Additionally, varsity boys tennis student-athletes William C. (‘21) and Alex L. (‘21) were honored with the coveted Spirit of IASAS award for their exemplary interaction with their host family’s 8th grade son.

Propelling the varsity boys swimming team’s repeat title were Jason L. (‘21)’s IASAS-record 100m breaststroke time and a TAS-record 400m medley relay performance from Ethan D. (‘21), Jason L., Daolong Y. (‘21), and Hironori K. (‘21) that netted TAS the silver medal. Hironori K. (50m butterfly), Justin W. (‘19; 400m individual medley), Jason L. (100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke, and 100m butterfly), and the all-senior 400m freestyle relay team of David W., Ethan W., Jason W., and Justin W. all took home gold medals for the Tigers in their respective events.

The varsity girls basketball team was excruciatingly close to a third consecutive IASAS gold medal before falling 49-47 to SAS. Despite numerous key players encountering foul trouble the Tigers led 45-34 with under two minutes to play. An Eagles offensive rebound and putback with seven seconds remaining was the difference as SAS prevailed and the Tigers and all-tournament honorees Cheyenne H. (‘19) and Sabrina C. (‘21) returned home with a silver medal for their valiant effort.

TAS athletes represented their community with grace in both victory and adverse circumstances during their historic effort this season. Thank you for your continued support of our Tigers—onward to Season 3!

TAS teams earned six medals at Season 3 IASAS events to run this year’s total to a school record 16

Our Season 3 teams rose to the occasion at Season 3 IASAS Championship events in Jakarta, Bangkok, and here in Taipei. Six out of eight teams medaled this season to run TAS sports teams' medal count to a record-breaking 16 for the year!

TAS teams had taken home the previous high of 13 medals on three separate occasions prior to golf's entry into the IASAS fold in 2013-2014, then had reached that total a fourth time in 2017-2018.

Girls Badminton (GOLD): Defeated JIS 3-2 in the final to earn the program's 16th consecutive gold medal.
Girls Golf (GOLD): Captured its fifth consecutive IASAS title. Rowena L. ('19) and Shana Y. ('20) tied for fourth place in the stroke play competition with two-round scores of 171, and TAS ran off a 5-1 match play record on Saturday to earn the gold.
Girls Track & Field (GOLD): Ran away from the field by posting 193 points to Singapore's 147. Event Gold Medalists: 3000m: Sarahi Z. (‘20); Javelin: Maya R. (‘21); 400m Hurdles: Jessica T. (‘19); High Jump: Jesse W. (‘20); 100m Hurdles: Jessica T.; Shot Put: Maya R.; 1500m: Evelyn L. (‘20).

Softball (SILVER): Demonstrated a remarkable year-on-year improvement by reaching the gold medal game against Singapore after finishing fifth in the program's inaugural IASAS berth in spring 2018.
Boys Golf (BRONZE): Isaac K. (‘20) and Ryan K. (‘19) led the way during the Day 1 and 2 stroke play competition with two-round scores of 151 and 155, respectively. The Tigers took out JIS 5-1 in match play on the final day. 
Boys Badminton (5th place): Suffered a string of hard-fought losses, including three pool play defeats by the score of 2-3.
Baseball (6th place): Fought hard in its final game this morning against JIS before falling 2-3 to finish sixth. A special congratulations goes out to assistant coach John Imbrogulio, who earned the Spirit of IASAS award!
